Which patients need a bone density test?

  • Men and women over 65 years of age

  • Post-menopausal women and men over 50 with an additional risk factor such as parental hip fracture, personal fragility fracture, smoking or excessive use of alcohol

  • Other patients with clinical concerns where bone density information will aid in patient management

Follow-up bone density criteria:

  • MSP billable at two-year intervals

  • MSP billable after at least six months if one of the following applies (must be specified on the requisition):

    • Corticosteroid therapy

    • Existing fractures

    • Very low bone density

If you are a patient, the information below will help you prepare for your bone density test:

  • If you take calcium tablets, do not take your calcium tablet the day of the test.

  • Try to wear a top with no buttons, zippers or hooks, such as a T-shirt or sweater.

  • If you have a pair of slacks with an elastic waistband, that would be ideal. If not, then please wear loose-fitting slacks.

  • If you are a woman, wear a sports bra with no wires or hooks. If you don’t have one, that’s OK. Our technologist will know what to do.

  • If you are wheelchair-bound, you must be accompanied by someone who can help you transfer out of the chair and onto the testing table. The surface of the testing table is 2.5 feet off the floor.

  • If there is any chance you are pregnant, you cannot have this test.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please give us at least 48 hours notice. Call TOLL FREE 1-866-226-6143.
